Late one afternoon this past August, Shakira heard banging on her front gate. Outside were two men in bandoliers and black turbans, carrying rifles. They were members of the Taliban, who were waging an offensive to wrest the countryside back from the Afghan National Army. The family crossed an old footbridge spanning a canal, then snaked their way through reeds and irregular plots of beans and onions, past dark and vacant houses. Their neighbors had been warned, too, and, except for wandering chickens and orphaned cattle, the village was empty.

Minor girls paraded naked in Madhya Pradesh village to ‘appease rain god’

Six minor girls in central India were stripped and paraded naked as part of a village ritual to summon rains. The incident took place in a drought-parched village in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh state. Videos that went viral on social media reportedly showed young girls walking naked with a wooden shaft on their shoulders which had a frog tied to it. Locals believe the ritual will appease the rain god and bring rainfall to the region. India's National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has sought a report from the administration of Damoh district, where the village is located. The Madhya Pradesh police said they had not received any formal complaint against the event, but added that they had opened an investigation.

For desperate locals, one superstitious way to invoke rains and seek relief was to make minor girls walk naked around the village to please the rain god. The ritual, documented through videos on social media, has raised concerns about sexual abuse and child rights. As seen on the video, six girls, believed to be around five years old, walked to different households begging for pulses, food cereals, and flour.
